Dato is the most common title awarded in Malaysia. Datuk is by the head of state do not have Sultan.

The state has Dato such as Johor, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, Terengganu. The state has Datuk such as Melaka, Sabah, Sarawak.
