PETALING JAYA: Several Umno leaders have criticised Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin over a social media post she made following the High Court’s ruling on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s judicial review bid, saying her remarks were insensitive and disrespectful.
In a Facebook statement, Umno supreme council member and BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said there was no reason to rejoice over the outcome of a case involving someone’s personal hardship.
“Why is there a need to celebrate? Do not take pleasure in another person’s suffering,” he wrote, cautioning against arrogance in politics.
“Life goes in cycles. Remember that your leaders are not free from mistakes either,” he added.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki also slammed Yeo’s comments, calling them highly inappropriate, especially coming from DAP’s national publicity secretary.
“The statement is extremely rude and inhumane,” he said, adding that while one may disagree with the court’s decision, basic courtesy should still be upheld.
“If you cannot show even a little empathy, then at least avoid making harsh and hurtful remarks,” he wrote on social media.
Asyraf also hinted that Umno may need to rethink its role in the unity government.
“Perhaps it is time for Umno to reassess this cooperation if some parties still fail to appreciate Umno’s contributions and struggles all these years,” he added.
Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh went further, questioning the party’s continued support for the current government.
“What more are we waiting for? Just withdraw support from this government.
“It is better to be an opposition with dignity than to stay and be insulted by these ignorant people,” he said in a social media post.
Johor PKR Youth chief Faezuddin Puad also commented on the issue, saying it was inappropriate to celebrate the decision.
“Although we may differ in opinion, we call on everyone to respect the court’s ruling.
“At the same time, we should be mindful of our partners’ feelings within the unity government,” he wrote on Facebook.
