Tilapia Biofloc perkukuh keterjaminan makanan negara

PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) continues to strengthen the country’s food security agenda by implementing a Tank-Based Fish Farming Project using modern Biofloc technology at Wisma LKIM Puchong yesterday.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the release of tilapia fingerlings aligns with the 2026 New Year Address, which emphasises strengthening the resilience of Malaysia’s food sector.

He explained that the project adopts a more modern and efficient approach compared with conventional fish farming methods, particularly in terms of water usage, cleanliness, and farm management.

“Biofloc technology uses less water, is cleaner, and more efficient. It is suitable for limited spaces, including urban areas,” he said in a social media post.

Under the programme, 4,800 red tilapia fingerlings were released as the initial phase. The project is expected to produce results within three to four months, with estimated returns of about RM15,000.

Mohamad added that apart from generating income, the project also serves as a training platform for LKIM officers and fishermen, helping them become familiar with modern aquaculture technology.

“This is not just about sales revenue, but about training and building the capacity of real players on the ground so they are better prepared for future challenges,” he said.

He stressed that small steps taken consistently can have a significant impact on national food sovereignty and the long-term well-being of the people.
