Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Warning for KL, Putrajaya, and Eight Other States

Date: January 5, 2025

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a severe weather warning, forecasting thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds across Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and eight other states. The warning is in effect until 9 PM today, with potential risks including flash floods, landslides, and travel disruptions in affected areas.

In a statement, MetMalaysia highlighted the affected states, which include Kedah (Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim, and Bandar Baharu), Penang, Perak, and Pahang, particularly Cameron Highlands. Other states under alert are Selangor, Johor (Batu Pahat, Pontian, Johor Bahru), Sarawak (Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Limbang), and Sabah, with a focus on Sipitang, Tenom, Nabawan, Tawau, and Sandakan.

Heavy rainfall earlier today caused flash floods in parts of Jalan Salak and Sungai Rokam, Ipoh, disrupting traffic and damaging property. Images captured by Bernama show water levels rising rapidly, submerging roads and affecting local businesses.

MetMalaysia advised residents in these areas to take precautionary measures, including staying indoors, avoiding low-lying areas prone to flooding, and preparing emergency supplies. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, as slippery roads and reduced visibility pose significant hazards.

Public infrastructure, including drainage systems, is being monitored closely by local authorities to mitigate further risks. Emergency response teams have been activated in flood-prone regions, and evacuation centers are on standby to accommodate affected residents.

For real-time updates and safety guidelines, residents are encouraged to follow MetMalaysia’s official channels and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
