Three men have pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court in Petaling Jaya to charges of setting fire to three vehicles belonging to the wife of social activist S. Chandrasegaran, better known as Cikgu Chandra, during an incident in Taman Kinrara, Puchong.
The accused, aged between 32 and 37, were jointly charged with committing mischief by fire involving two Perodua vehicles and a Proton car belonging to M. Sri Uma Mahesvary, 50. The incident, which allegedly took place at around 3.00am on March 10, is estimated to have caused losses of RM80,000.
They were charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which carries a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence. However, the court granted bail of RM8,000 for each accused with one surety, while imposing additional conditions including regular reporting to the nearest police station, surrendering their passports, and prohibiting any contact with prosecution witnesses.
The case had previously attracted public attention following reports of alleged arson and criminal intimidation involving Cikgu Chandra’s family. The court has fixed a later date for further proceedings.
