The Hidden Factor Behind Truck and Bus Collisions with Cars

KUALA LUMPUR – A tyre company and its two directors have landed in court after being accused of trying to pass off retreaded tyres as certified products by using counterfeit SIRIM logos.

Yik Woh Tyre Enterprise Sdn Bhd, along with its directors Yip Wei Leong, 43, and Yip Wing Kee, 70, were charged in the Sessions Court for allegedly affixing fake SIRIM MS 224:2005 stickers on 107 retreaded tyres of various brands and sizes in February.

The alleged offence took place at No. 11, 13 and 15, Jalan Meranti 11, Meranti Jaya Industrial Park, Puchong, at about 11.30am on February 13. All three accused pleaded not guilty before Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman.

According to the charge, the two directors face action under Section 21(b) of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011. If convicted, they could be fined up to RM200,000, jailed for as long as three years, or both. Repeat offenders face stiffer penalties — up to RM500,000 in fines or five years behind bars.

As for the company, the charge falls under Section 21(a) of the same Act, which prescribes a maximum fine of RM500,000 for the first offence and up to RM1 million for subsequent ones.

If found guilty, the case could serve as a strong warning to businesses attempting to misuse certification marks.
