Social StoriesPuchong Food Vendor Accused of Pricing Meals Based on Race Sets the Record Straight

A Nasi Kukus vendor in Puchong, Nasi Kukus Malaya, had been receiving flak online after people assumed that she had charged customers of different races varying prices for a meal.

In one of her videos, the vendor could be seen serving a meal to an Indian customer before charging him RM17. She then went on to serve a Malay customer a similar-looking meal but charged him RM8.

This caused many to point out the difference in the prices charged to the 2 customers of different races and insinuated that the vendor was racist.

“If you notice the rice portions (between the Indian and Malay customers) are the same, the dishes are the same but the Indian customer was charged RM17 while the Malay customer was charged RM8. How is she calculating this?”

“She charges Indians RM17 but when Malays purchase her food, it’s only RM8.”

“It’s true, many are noticing this, right? Why are the prices different. (Is she charging) based on skin (colour)?”

But, this is absolutely not the case!

Firstly, the alleged Indian customer noticed the backlash and commented on the vendor’s post to explain that he was charged RM17 for two meals, not just the 1 meal that was shown in the vendor’s video.

“Alamak. I am the Indian customer. The RM17 was for (my food) and (my friend’s food) lah.”

The vendor, too, set things straight in another video, where she explained what the Indian customer and his friend had ordered.

The 2 sets that were ordered were a chicken rice meal with extra rice, for which the vendor charged the Indian customer RM9, and another chicken rice meal which cost RM8, totalling RM17.

“Actually, the Indian brother came with a friend. The Indian brother’s friend ordered Ayam Kunyit rice at RM8 and added rice, making it RM9. The Indian brother ordered Ayam Kunyit rice, which cost RM8. So, I charged them RM17 for the 2 meals,”

“After this, don’t make reckless accusations again, or I might become angry! And this proves that I am not a racist. I love all races,” the vendor laughed, handling the situation with grace.
