Safer School Commutes Ahead? Covered Walkway Linking LRT Puchong Prima and SMK Puchong Permai Planned

Parents and students in Puchong Prima and Puchong Permai could benefit from improved pedestrian facilities, as a new covered walkway connecting LRT Puchong Prima station to SMK Puchong Permai is expected to begin construction within the next one to two months.

The project was announced on 13 October 2026 by Selangor state executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han following a pedestrian walkway inspection in the area. Planned by the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) in collaboration with the developer, the walkway aims to provide a safer and more comfortable route, particularly for students travelling to school by public transport.

Key Details of the Planned Walkway

  • Location: Between LRT Puchong Prima station and SMK Puchong Permai.

  • Expected construction start: Within one to two months from the announcement on 13 October 2026.

  • Estimated completion time: Approximately six months after construction begins.

  • Approval status: The project remains subject to approval from the One-Stop Centre (OSC).

  • Main objective: To improve pedestrian safety and provide a more comfortable walking route for students and other public transport users.

Existing Pedestrian Safety Measures

During the inspection, officials found that pedestrian walkways around Puchong Prima and Puchong Permai were generally in fairly good condition, although two to three locations still required improvements.

Pedestrian safety near SMK Puchong Permai has also been a concern, particularly during school hours when traffic and pedestrian movements can create potential accident risks.

In March 2026, MBSJ installed an artificial intelligence-based Smart Sensor Awareness (SENSA) system at the pedestrian crossing outside the school as a pilot safety initiative. The system detects pedestrians and activates real-time audio and visual warnings to alert motorists and pedestrians.

Why This Matters to Puchong Families

For families living around Puchong Prima and Puchong Permai, a covered walkway could make daily school commutes more convenient, especially during hot weather and rain. It could also encourage more students to use public transport while reducing their exposure to traffic risks when walking between the station and school.

However, the project has not yet started, and its construction timeline depends on the necessary approval. Residents should therefore treat the dates as expected rather than confirmed.

What do you think?

Would a covered walkway between LRT Puchong Prima and SMK Puchong Permai make a meaningful difference to students and parents? Are there other schools or pedestrian routes in Puchong that you think MBSJ should prioritise for better walking facilities?
