Puchong pupils win triple gold for green innovation projects

KUALA LUMPUR: Four Malaysian primary school pupils have brought pride to the nation after clinching top honours at three international innovation competitions.

The pupils were crowned champions and received a gold award at the World Sustainable Development Goal Challenge (WSDGC) 2025 and the World Innovation in STEM Competition (WINSTEM) 2025, the organisers said in a statement.

They later secured another gold medal at the Malaysia Young Scientists Organisation (MYSO) competition in Bangkok earlier this month.

Competing against 92 teams and nearly 1,000 participants at MYSO, the young innovators stood out among international contenders.

The award ceremony was held at the Meroz Hotel in Bangkok on Feb 1.

The quartet — Aarthisha Thiban, Aatheesha Moorthy, Keshwinie Arvin Kumar and Puraani Vivegan, all aged 11 — are pupils of SJK(T) Kinrara in Puchong.

WSDGC, held at Multimedia University in Cyberjaya, challenges students to develop solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

WINSTEM, organised in collaboration with the National Science Centre and Sirim Berhad, provides a platform for students to showcase talent in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

For both WSDGC and WINSTEM, the team presented Home-Made Hibiscus Tea — Cool & Healthy Drink for Hot Weather, a sustainability-focused project promoting a natural and affordable beverage made from locally sourced hibiscus flowers.

The project highlighted hydration and antioxidant benefits while encouraging responsible use of natural resources in Malaysia’s tropical climate.

At MYSO, the pupils explored biodegradable materials for cultivating indoor herbal plants for home remedies, reinforcing their emphasis on green innovation.

Since early 2025, the team has been conducting research on green plants and their health benefits.

Their triple-gold achievement highlights the growing strength of Malaysia’s young innovators in sustainability and STEM, demonstrating environmental awareness and scientific curiosity at an early age.
