Mother Recalls Daughter’s Final Call Before Fatal Accident

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 14 — The harrowing final moments of Lee Zi Rou’s life, a 21-year-old woman who tragically died after her car was crushed by a cargo container at a traffic light in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, were marked by a desperate call to her mother.

“Mummy! It hurts so much!” Lee’s voice trembled over the phone before silence fell.

In a moving interview with China Press, her mother, who wished to be identified only as Lim, recounted the chilling moment she realized her daughter was in grave danger. “I sensed she had died,” Lim shared through tears.

The accident occurred when a lorry reportedly lost control while making a sharp left turn, causing the container it was transporting to topple onto Lee’s vehicle. Another car, driven by 25-year-old Tan Chou Theng, was also struck. Tan survived with serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital by nearby witnesses.

Lim said she had always emphasized to her daughters that they should only call in emergencies. When Lee’s call came, Lim’s heart sank.

“I told them that if they call, it means there is an emergency,” Lim said. She quickly directed her other daughter to drive along Lee’s usual route to work. Upon arriving at the accident scene, a bystander informed Lim that her daughter had been crushed under the container.

Despite immediate attempts to assist, the container’s immense weight made rescue impossible.

“She called at 9:24am, and my daughter had died by 9:30am,” Lim recounted, the grief palpable in her words.

At the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court, the 51-year-old lorry driver involved in the accident was remanded for investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to RM50,000, and a driving licence suspension of 10 to 20 years.
