Melt-in-the-Mouth Char Siu at Char Siew Boy

Date: Wednesday, 08 Jan 2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — Fans of the iconic melt-in-the-mouth char siu from Shamelin Perkasa’s Restoran Uncle Meng were saddened to learn of its closure last year due to the retirement of its founder. Thankfully, a former apprentice, Pang Wai Kean, has brought a similar experience to Pandan Perdana with his stall, Char Siew Boy.

Pang, who trained under Uncle Meng for four years, now serves char siu, roast chicken, poached chicken, and siew yoke at Restoran Hou Wan Loi. His char siu boasts tender meat with an alluring mix of sweet, sticky charness and melt-in-the-mouth fat, albeit with slightly more texture to cater to his regulars’ preferences.

Highlights include fragrant chicken-flavored rice, a balanced spicy-sour chili sauce, and soups made with root vegetables and chicken, boiled to achieve a golden brown hue. Pang’s dedication to quality and a cleaner dining environment has made Char Siew Boy a go-to spot for many.

Is it Halal?
Char Siew Boy specializes in pork-based dishes, including char siu and siew yoke. As such, it is not halal.
