PETALING JAYA: A lorry driver managed to escape with minor injuries after the vehicle he was driving burst into flames while on the Putrajaya-Cyberjaya Highway yesterday.
Sepang deputy police chief Shan Gopal Krishnan said the man, in his 70s, was on his way from Dengkil to Puchong at about 6.30pm when he noticed smoke emanating from the lorry’s engine.
The driver tried to stop the vehicle but decided against it after noticing that the flames were spreading rapidly. He then jumped out of the lorry, as the vehicle continued moving on the road.
In a now viral video, the fiery lorry can be seen careening off Km38 of the highway from the right lane into an exit.
“The complainant escaped with minor injuries but the lorry was totally destroyed by the fire,” said Shan in a statement.
“The driver has alerted the owner of the lorry and also lodged a police report over the incident. The lorry owner has no plans to make insurance claims as he believes the compensation amount will be small.”
