PETALING JAYA:

The tourism, arts and culture ministry has suspended the licence of umrah travel company Hejira Travel & Tours Holding Sdn Bhd for violating the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482).

In a statement, the ministry said the suspension is effective from Feb 28 to Aug 31, with the company required to fulfil its obligations for all booked or paid trips and to cease new transactions.

“This includes halting all advertising of umrah packages and immediately refunding payments as well as returning documents belonging to pilgrims who choose to cancel their bookings,” it said.

On Jan 30, Bukit Aman commercial crime investigation department director Ramli Yoosuf said 137 police reports had been filed against Hejira Travel & Tours involving losses exceeding RM2.94 million.

Police had opened 13 probe papers following the police reports.

On Jan 14, FMT said 300 pilgrims scheduled to depart for Mecca had claimed they were cheated by the company after it failed to provide them with their flight tickets, hotel accommodations and visas.

More than 50 of them had gathered outside the company’s premises to demand refunds. Police later arrested eight people, including a married couple who owned the agency, to assist in investigations.

Separately, the ministry said it had also cancelled the operating licence of Borneovac Travel Sdn Bhd for flouting Act 482, effective Feb 28.
