Lion Dance, Firecrackers, and Oranges Bring Cheer to Puchong Apartment
PUCHONG: The air in Puchong was filled with the rhythmic beat of drums and the crackle of firecrackers as residents of Saraka Apartment in Taman Wawasan came together to celebrate Chinese New Year in a vibrant display of unity and tradition.
The celebration, the first of its kind for the apartment community, featured a lively lion dance performance, the lighting of firecrackers, and the distribution of mandarin oranges—a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.
Resident Micheale See, 45, expressed her joy at being part of the historic event. Preparations began at dawn, with the committee working hard to decorate the apartment hall.
“It is a blessing to be spending time and celebrating the festivities with our neighbours,” she said.
The spirit of togetherness was evident among residents of all backgrounds. Noorazman Sabudin, 58, attended the event dressed in a bright red samfu, saying he was delighted to participate and mingle with his neighbours.
In his 25 years living at Saraka Apartment, he noted, this was the first time such a celebration had been organised collectively.
“This event is important because it allows us to get to know one another better and encourages closer ties,” he said.
Saraka Apartment management committee chairman Vigness Rao credited the organising committee for their hard work in ensuring the event’s success. He emphasised that proper planning and strong participation from residents were key to making the celebration happen.
Vigness added that the management committee hopes to continue organising similar festivities to maintain and strengthen community bonds.
The celebration also paid special attention to the apartment’s senior citizens, who make up the majority of residents. They were presented with souvenirs during the event, bringing smiles to many faces.
Che Onn Sheikh Mohammad Osman, 77, who lives at the apartment with his daughter, said he was happy to receive his gift and hopes more celebrations will be held for other festive occasions in the future.
