SUBANG JAYA, Dec 4 — Eighteen families affected by the April 1 gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights can finally return to their newly repaired and rebuilt homes in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the rehabilitation project, carried out by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB), was funded with RM4.85 million from the National Housing Disaster Trust Fund.
“The Madani government acted quickly to resolve this issue and restore hope to the victims,” he said during today’s key handover ceremony.
Nga said construction began on June 3 and, by late November, 15 houses had been completed. The remaining three are awaiting documentation from their owners.
Repairs for homes in Putra Heights were handled by developer Sime Darby Berhad, while SPNB oversaw the work for the homes in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru.
“We will continue monitoring the situation and providing the necessary support. I hope these rebuilt homes will give the families a safer and more promising future,” he added.
The explosion had destroyed 81 houses with severe structural damage, while another 81 were partially damaged. A further 57 houses were affected but not burned.
At the event, Nga also highlighted SPNB’s achievements for 2025 under the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) programme, which completed 5,450 units at a total cost of RM504 million — a 56 per cent increase from 2024.
He further announced that for 2026, SPNB will build 6,545 RMR units with a RM500 million allocation.
SPNB has also launched the MyRMR application, which includes features for applicants, solicitors, contractors, and SPNB officers to help speed up application and project monitoring processes.
One of the affected residents, Hasrina Nordin, 39, expressed her gratitude after waiting six months to have her home rebuilt.
“No words can describe the difficulties we faced. But alhamdulillah, our home has finally been restored,” said the religious teacher.
Another victim, Sharifah Mustafa, 59, also thanked KPKT and SPNB for their swift action.
