PETALING JAYA: The government is studying a new proposal to complete the long-delayed Maju Expressway Extension (MEX II), according to Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.
In a parliamentary reply to Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong), Nanta revealed that the public-private partnership unit in the Prime Minister’s Department received a fresh proposal from the project’s receivers and managers last December.
Nanta said the government is currently reviewing the proposal before it is brought to the Cabinet for a final decision.
However, he noted that several critical issues remain unresolved, preventing the project from moving forward immediately.
“Matters involving cash flow, financing costs, traffic impact analysis, the concession period, toll rates and other related issues to ensure the project remains viable have not been finalised,” he said.
The MEX II project, which is intended to extend the MEX Highway by linking the Putrajaya interchange to the KLIA highway, has been stalled for years.
Construction initially began in 2016 but came to a halt after the concessionaire faced severe cash flow problems and defaulted on payments to investors in January 2022. This led to the appointment of receivers and managers to take over the project, restructure its finances, and oversee the completion of the remaining works.
In December, Nanta stated that approximately RM449 million is required to finish the extension.
