Driver leaps from fiery runaway lorry

SEPANG: A lorry driver narrowly escaped serious burns when his vehicle suddenly caught fire while travelling along Km38 of the Putrajaya-Cyberjaya highway yesterday evening.

Sepang police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman said the incident occurred about 6.30pm when the 45-year-old man was driving an Inokom lorry from Dengkil headed to Puchong.

"Checks showed the driver had noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment and wanted to stop the lorry by the side of the road.

“But before he could find a safe spot to stop, the fire quickly spread, forcing him to jump from the moving vehicle,” Norhizam said.

The lorry, which continued moving for a short distance before it crashed and stopped, was completely destroyed in the blaze.

He said the driver sustained minor injuries and the lorry owner had been notified, adding that a police report was lodged by the driver.

Despite the significant damage,Norhizam said the vehicle owner has opted not to file an insurance claim due to the minimal compensation value.

He added that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
