Poor water quality has been ruled out as the cause of the mass tilapia deaths at D’ Island Lake in Putra Perdana, Puchong.
Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) began investigating after receiving complaints on Dec 1.
She said a large number of decomposing tilapia were found in the lake, creating a foul smell.
However, water samples taken from all inlets showed good quality, with a Dissolved Oxygen (DO) reading of 15mg/L.
“This shows that water quality was not the factor behind the fish deaths,” Jamaliah said in a statement.
Investigations found that the dead fish came from a fish cage in the lake, although authorities have not been able to identify the owner.
Jamaliah added that Luas had completed 40% of the cleanup work, and the remaining carcasses were expected to be removed by this weekend.
