Modle, a Malaysian company founded by entrepreneur Loh Jon Ming, is transforming the way parents and children spend time together with its innovative indoor playgrounds. These spaces are designed to create a balance for modern parents juggling work and family life, providing areas where children can play while parents stay productive.
Recognizing the growing number of freelancers and remote workers frequenting cafés, Loh envisioned cozy corners where children could safely explore and play while parents worked nearby. This led to the creation of Modle, which offers open-ended play and furniture products, ideal for both public spaces and private homes.
A Unique Approach to Play
Modle’s playgrounds are made from locally sourced furniture-grade plywood, emphasizing eco-friendliness and sustainability. These natural materials give the structures a warm, welcoming feel, contrasting with the “cold” metal and plastic typically found in playgrounds. The company’s designs are also carbon-negative, aligning with Loh’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
Each playset is customizable and caters to different age groups. For instance, playgrounds for toddlers and preschoolers focus on safety with lower slides and padded areas, while sets for older children include climbing walls and more challenging features. Beyond catering to children, Modle is also exploring the development of adult obstacle courses inspired by American Ninja Warrior.
Supporting Child Development
Play is at the heart of Modle’s mission. Loh believes that physical play is vital for fostering motor skills, creativity, and resilience in children. He emphasizes that free play is a better alternative to excessive screen time, helping children build character and learn important life skills.
“Technology is great, but children should not be slaves to gadgets. All kids should be introduced to free play—it’s how they learn a lot of valuable lessons,” Loh explained.
A Growing Presence
Modle’s playsets have been installed in prominent locations across the Klang Valley, including Kam Kee Café and Abby’s Play Café in Bukit Jalil, Nippori Café in One Utama, and The Red Beanbag in Mutiara Damansara. One of the largest installations is at the luxurious St Regis Kuala Lumpur. The company is also expanding to other states, with playgrounds recently built in Johor and Penang.
The Vision for the Future
Loh’s ultimate goal is to create spaces that strengthen family bonds. By offering enriching play experiences outside the home, Modle aims to redefine how families spend quality time together. As the company grows, it continues to inspire a healthier, more balanced lifestyle for both parents and children.
