KUALA LUMPUR: The Inspector General of Police has commended two of his men who have gone viral for helping a jobless man.
The two personnel noticed the motorcyclist flagging them down during patrols at Petaling Jaya before trying to sell them his watch because he was having difficultly finding work.
One of the policemen handed him some cash aid and advised him to sell the watch online.
A video of the incident has been making its rounds on social media.
Tan Sri Razarudin Husain thanked the two personnel for going above and beyond the call of duty.
"Corporal Mohd Fandy Abd Lahit and Lance Corporal Mohammad Hafizul Hakimi Yusof have shown what the true spirit of policing is.
"They have shown kindness and compassion while dispensing their duties in the field.
They will be given letters of appreciation for their actions," he told the New Straits Times.
The TikTok video by user @bigredmachine3196 has gone viral, raising concern among 577,800 viewers for the unemployed man.
In the video, a policeman is performing his usual duties when he is approached by a middle-aged man in need of help.
Desperate to provide for his family, the father of two resorted to this action to earn some money.
The man stopped by the roadside and showed the officer his genuine one-year-old G-Shock watch, asking if he was interested in buying it for RM100.
However, the officer felt it was unsafe to stop on the highway and asked the man to follow him to a safer location.
Once they moved to a safer spot, the officer engaged the man in conversation and learned that he was ill and seeking employment in the Puchong area.
Touched by the father’s dedication, the officer offered the man some money to help him out, and told the man to keep the watch.
Initially, the man refused but finally accepted the RM30 from the officer, expressing gratitude for the policeman’s kindness.
