City dwellers raise concerns over safety as stray dogs and monkeys wander unchecked

BUKIT WAWASAN, PUCHONG – Residents living near Bukit Wawasan are raising safety concerns as wild monkeys from the nearby forest reserve continue to invade their neighbourhoods and homes.

The monkey problem, which began a few years ago, has reportedly worsened after some residents started feeding the animals, making them bolder and more aggressive.

“They come almost every afternoon, climbing fences, rooftops and even opening windows. If the kitchen is left open, they ransack the food,” said Adila (not her real name), who works at the Joint Management Body (JMB) office of a nearby apartment complex.

She added that children have been chased by groups of monkeys on their way home from school, sparking fear among parents. “Even if a child is just holding a piece of bread, they’ll be chased. What if someone gets bitten?” she told Bernama.

Residents also reported that the monkeys have learned to pry open roof tiles and sneak into homes from above, causing damage to ceilings and rooftops.

Although the JMB has filed complaints with the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ), the council explained that handling wild animals falls under the responsibility of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan).

Adila stressed that while MBSJ may not have the authority to capture the monkeys, residents want clear action or collaboration between agencies to address the issue.
