According to a tweet from user @riisams on Twitter, we may be seeing an imminent launch for Apple Pay in Malaysia.
The tweet includes an image of a cardboard sign that reads “Apple Pay accepted here”, and in the replies of the tweet, the original poster claims that the sign was spotted at a Maxis centre. According to a report from a local news portal, the sign was on display at the Maxis Centre at Sri Muda Shah Alam.
Shopee has also shown some signs of Apple Pay’s possible upcoming arrival in Malaysia, with the ecommerce platform having added Apple Pay as a payment option. Currently, the payment method is shown during checkout, however the option is greyed out with users not able to select it.
A previous report from another tech portal shared further signs of an upcoming Malaysian Apple Pay launch, with AmBank having sent out an SMS prematurely in July this year saying that Apple Pay was compatible with the customer’s bank card.
At the time of publication, there has not been an official announcement from Apple on the availability of Apple Pay in Malaysia.
Apple’s mobile payment service was first launched in 2014, and is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. The service is currently only available in certain regions, with our neighbouring Singapore being the only South-East Asian country to have official support.
Google’s competing payment service – Google Pay – has been available in Malaysia since 2019, and was added as a payment option on Shopee back in December of last year.
