Selangor fire and rescue department assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said nine personnel and a fire engine were deployed to KLIA2 following the emergency landing by an AirAsia aircraft early this morning.
It says the aircraft returned to the bay for repairs due to a damaged duct in one engine that had caused the release of hot air.
PETALING JAYA:
AirAsia today denied that its Shenzhen-bound flight made an emergency landing at KLIA2 just past midnight due to an engine fire, as claimed by the Selangor fire and rescue department.
AirAsia said the aircraft had to return to the bay for repairs due to a damaged duct in one engine that had caused the release of hot air.
“AirAsia confirms that there was no engine fire,” it said in a statement, adding that the plane is expected to return to service on Monday.
AirAsia’s deputy group CEO of airline operations Chester Voo was quoted as saying that the flight crew had acted swiftly and followed safety and operational protocols.
“Our pilots and cabin crew are trained to handle such situations and the aircraft landed safely with no further incident after the appropriate procedures were conducted,” he added.
AirAsia also confirmed that all 171 passengers had safely disembarked and were transferred to another flight which departed at 3.46am and landed at Shenzhen’s Bao’an International Airport in China at 7.51am.
Earlier, FMT reported that AirAsia’s flight AK128 was forced to make an emergency landing at KLIA2 due to a fire which ignited in its right engine mid-flight.
Selangor fire and rescue department assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said they received a distress call at 10.37pm and immediately deployed nine personnel and a fire engine to the airport’s Runway 3.
He said the aircraft’s Halon suppression system completely extinguished the fire before landing, and that the cause of the fire was identified as a pneumatic ducting burst.
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia would investigate the emergency landing as per normal procedure.
